Real Talk: Parents Should Get Insured First — Not Their Kids

Let’s talk about something I often see (and honestly, understand). 🥹

Some parents start getting insurance or investment plans for their kids — thinking, “At least secured na sila.”

But here’s the tricky part: when the breadwinner — the parent — isn’t insured, that’s where the real financial risk stays unprotected.

⚠️ The Risk No One Talks About

If the parent passes away or becomes critically ill:

  • The family’s income stops.

  • The child’s policy might lapse because premiums can’t be paid anymore.

  • Daily needs and education plans get affected.

In short:
The one providing for the family is unprotected, while the one depending is insured — but for what purpose?

Why This Happens

Usually, it’s done out of love. ❤️

Parents want to give their kids the best start in life... and that’s admirable.

But sometimes, these plans are marketed as “savings for your child’s future” when in reality, insurance works best when it first protects the income that sustains the family.

Because that’s what insurance really is — income protection.

It ensures that even if something unexpected happens, the family can still continue to live, study, and dream.

The Right Order of Protection

When it comes to insurance, it helps to think in order of responsibility:

Parent → Spouse → Children.

Secure the breadwinner first. Then your partner. Then the kids.

Because protecting yourself isn’t selfish, it’s an act of love.

Once the parents are covered, that’s the best time to explore policies for children, like savings or education-focused plans.

Final Thoughts

Even if I’m not a parent myself, I’ve seen this happen with many families I’ve worked with.

And it always reminds me: love isn’t just about providing, it’s also about preparing. 💛

So if you’re a parent (or even planning to be one someday), take this as your friendly reminder:
Protect yourself first. That’s how you truly protect your family.
